Is it ok to swim on my period?

Can you go swimming on your period?

The short answer is yes you can go swimming on your period. You do not have to change your usual activities or avoid the swimming pool during your menstrual period. However you will need to use period products to absorb your menstrual flow while you swim or are in the water.

You won't leave a bloody trail in the water!

Some people find the water pressure can restrict your period flow temporarily during swimming but you won't have stopped bleeding. As soon as you get out of the pool you would be at risk of blood being visible. It is important that you use tampons, a menstrual cup or period swimwear while swimming. Sanitary pads and pantyliners are not the best option as they will absorb water and become ineffective, uncomfortable and visible.

Can you wear a menstrual cup while swimming?

Absolutely! Menstrual cups are ideal for swimming on your period. Menstrual cups collect blood and hold the menstrual fluid inside your vagina until you get out to empty them.

Menstrual cups are made from high grade medical grade silicone are invisible to others and once in the right position you won't be able to feel them. Menstrual cups can be worn for up to eight hours however I'd recommend you empty your cup straight after swimming as some pool water may have got into the cup when you were moving.
